At Water UCI, one of our center’s goals is to provide educational and outreach programs. This new Guest Lecture Program emphasizes this point by partnering with interested local high schools to promote environmental science and policy, water science, and climate science. In collaboration with school educators, we allow Water UCI Field Study Students to become guest lecturers. These lectures focus on content relevant to climate, water, and environmental changes/crises as well as their solutions from both a scientific and policy perspective. Participating field study students are expected to prepare a few interactive lectures with detailed lesson plans and discussion activities to promote understanding and critical thinking for each class. We want our field study students to select topics they are passionate about and that they feel are not discussed enough in general education. The best way to bridge gaps of knowledge and break the barrier to entry for environmental and water-related fields is to communicate with younger audiences that may be unaware of career paths or opportunities in the Water or Environmental Sector. This program not only helps expose younger audiences to a world of possibility regarding current environmental/water problems and solutions, but it also allows our students demonstrate what they have been meticulously studying during their time at UCI.
