The UCI Livable Cities Lab is a nonprofit research hub, housed in the university’s School of Social Ecology. The Lab actively engages our community and seeks partnerships to solve pressing and immediate needs. Smart development, affordable housing, crime prevention, climate change, sustainability and regulatory reform are a few of the issues that Lab experts are addressing through our collaborations with public and private organizations.
Partnerships for International Research and Education (PIRE) is an NSF-wide program that supports international activities across all NSF supported disciplines. The primary goal of PIRE is to support high quality projects in which advances in research and education could not occur without international collaboration.
FloodRISE is a UC Irvine-led research project to promote resilience to coastal flooding in Southern California. The project uses advanced computer models to map flooding hazards on a house by house basis, and flood risk information is made accessible to residents, businesses and civic leaders through innovative communication strategies. The goal is to enhance flood risk planning and policies and to promote cost effective interventions.
The Center for Hydrometeorology and Remote Sensing has a mission to build global capacity for forecast and mitigation of hydrologic disasters through the development of means to extend the benefits of space and weather agencies’ vast technological resources, which are untapped, into applications that can assist hydrologists and water resource managers worldwide and through equitable access to relevant information.
The Global Integrated Drought Monitoring and Prediction System (GIDMaPS) is a drought monitoring and prediction system that provides near real-time drought information based on multiple drought indicators and input data sets.

UCI is a land grant institution with internationally recognized expertise in many sustainability -related domains. UCI seeks to harness its research, teaching, and service resources to address sustainability challenges facing the Salton Sea region. To this end, the Provost has created the Salton Sea Initiative. We view addressing the challenges at Salton Sea as multi-faceted, long term, and critical to Southern California’s future. We also believe that, as desertification and salinity crises expand globally, the solutions pioneered at the Sea could inform actions of similarly situated communities across the globe.
The Center for Environmental Biology in the School of Biological Sciences was established to facilitate research, education, and outreach in biological science to help develop innovative new solutions to environmental problems. We are applying science to conserve the wonderful biodiversity in our own backyard.
The UCI Water Energy Nexus Center (UCI WEX Center) promotes comprehensive and trans-disciplinary approaches to water efficiency, energy efficiency, and greenhouse gas reduction in an urban environment with a diverse, rapidly growing population.
